Insight Into the Nature of Memory in Heaven, and How the Nature of Memory There is an Extraordinary Blessing From God; And What We Can Learn From It”.

November 9th, 2020

The way the Lord guides our memory in heaven is a huge part of heavenly joy and happiness. It is truly an amazing grace that he gives to his beloved children. Memory there corresponds to wonderful gardens and paradises where there are beautiful plants, flowers, palaces and patios, and magnificent trees. These are places of peace, full of meaning and inner delight.

Paraphrasing Swedenborg (I add some edits to make it easier to read): Heavenly loves and delights come from love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor. The more one allows themself to be led by the Lord the more they become their own, that is, their true self. The thoughts and affections of a person in heaven are led by the Lord so that the person sees and chooses nothing else in the fields and gardens of their memory but those things which agree with the delights of their loves and with the doctrinal principles of their church. To them the things of the memory are like heavenly paradises, and in the Word they are also represented and signified by paradises.
Be it known further that when memory-knowledges, that is, the things of the memory, become of the man’s life, they vanish from the exterior memory, just as the gestures, actions, speech, reflections, intentions, and in general the thoughts and affections of man are wont to do, when by continual use or habit they become as it were spontaneous and natural; but no other things become of man’s life than those which enter into the delights of his loves and form them; thus those which enter into his will. (n. 3220)

The later paragraph brings to light something very important to ground ourself in. It shows that nothing is done by magic as our external mind tends to think, but life here and in heaven are always a process of becoming, meaning our will, body and soul must be exercised in cooperation with God in order to change. The action we reciprocally take part in is the very source of joy and delight, because in it we are choosing and making a bond between our body and soul, and with God. (Above Swedenborg calls this ‘becomes of the man’s life’.) I believe Swedenborg is also saying the actions we take that become a bond become part of our muscle memory so to speak; they become second nature; they become our own, and so, in continuing to build on this process we come into new levels of bonding, and by this continually increase in joy. This process only takes place when one’s ruling love is expressed in use to the neighbor and to God in some way.

In the gardens of heaven the further we go into them, among its features and paths, the more beautiful they become. Beauty is the form of love. Correspondingly, the further one goes within their internal self the more space and light there is; this is very clear in heaven. As Swedenborg says in the first part of the quote above the things in our memory that cause distress gradually fall away, not by being unilaterally removed, but because of a process of non attachment, because we move passed them as we are changing and birthing into a new life. The new goals, talents, excitement and skills in our mind and soul cause us to grow beyond the old memories so they are of no effect. Unless a memory is true to our new ruling love it falls away. This is expressed in the Bible verse, “All your tears shall be washed away’. These memories never completely disappear but move to the outside perimeter of our being. In heaven everything that is around us in our environment, items in ones home, everything in the landscape, in nature, in the palaces and places of worship correspond to the ruling loves in our soul.

This is an extraordinary blessing, and it is very different than in this world. Heaven is so masterfully and fluidly orchestrated from spiritual principle and divine order that every individual is surrounded by things that affirm their inner loves and joy. But here we are in the mix with evil and we have a material body which makes it hard to let go of distress and conflict. (We are meant to deal with this so that we can choose good over evil of our own will). Here there are constant reminders of suffering and injustice, and the natural body is sticky and gummy when it comes to letting go of attachments. Here our painful memories and traumas are stimulated by difficult situations, people, and authorities in our environment all the time. In heaven life is filled with opportunities to perform uses that use our skills and are fulfilling. Though not as easy, here we can do this also; we need to make it our mission to do so.

Light – It’s Meaning And Its Source: It’s Role To the Heart of Devotion

April 6th, 2020

Light corresponds to wisdom. This is often used as a metaphor, but it is an actual truth. They correspond in their image and function – they both shine and illuminate, and are both in union, light with heat and wisdom with love. Light is natural and wisdom is spiritual. From the natural sun radiates heat and light which sustain all life. From the spiritual sun, (which there is only one of and it is above heaven), radiates love and wisdom. For in the midst of the spiritual sun is the lord. In him is the Holy Marriage between his divine body and divine soul, and from this marriage proceeds Holy Fire as from a fountain, or as from a ‘spring of living water’. From the Holy Fire is generated the spiritual substance of life, love and wisdom. Love and wisdom sustain all life, and also are the containers of an infinite variety of spiritual gifts and qualities of love, and specific principles of wisdom. We tend to think of love and wisdom as abstractions, but they are not. The human soul is like an organ, the highest form in the universe because it is made in God’s image. Just as the eye is an organ that receives light, or the ear receives sound, the human soul is made (by the infinite genius of God) to receive love and wisdom. We receive love by our God given faculty of being able to will, and wisdom by our God given faculty of being able to understand. These are the essentials of having life, identity, self-hood and freedom. We can perceive that love and wisdom are spiritual substance simply by observing our affections. We can feel the affections are real in our body and soul – they cause sensation, emotions and thought. There are affections of many kinds, and all thought is proceeded by affection. An internal desire initiates thinking a thought. The human soul is corrupted by evil, so we have the capacity for both good and evil. We can invert the spiritual substance from God into its opposite – hate and falsity. (But this is a whole other story). The love and wisdom that proceeds from God is always Good. It is goodness itself in all of its innumerable particulars. So we human beings are receptacle. Some people think this is a diminishing thing to say, but it’s really not. The incalculable value of seeing this is that we perceive we are truly in a position of humility to God, and, in seeing this we can open to feel how He loves us beyond words. If one does feel it is diminishing to be a receptacle then so be it if it helps to humble ourself. God can only be approached in humility. This is not weakness, but takes strength, faith and love – and returns them magnified. It is often very hard to do because we have all kinds of feeling and thoughts in the way – of anger, doubt, fear, resignation, hate and many others. So it takes some time, focus and desire – and being in the Word. The Word is divine truth from Him, and divine truth, is the light that illumines our mind.

Trump’s Great Acquittal Speech: How His Center of Gravity Is Transforming the GOP, America, and the World

February 9th, 2020

Very inspiring watching Trump’s wonderful acquittal speech. He went off script and called it a celebration. You can see the ‘gravity’ of his presence in the room. Everyone around him respects him, and are getting stronger in their own right, and they see he is the center of the gravity – he is the leader, the heart and soul. It is his genius that initiated the movement and makes it work. In the room there are a lot of very smart, ambitious men and women for their own careers, but they are coming together in a way we have never seen the GOP do. Most of the leaders, probably hundreds of them now, would run through a brick wall for Trump! He masterfully cultivates this loyalty for the good of all because he knows a unity of talented people is very powerful. Trump just went through a series of intense attacks from the left for three years. He was the center of the attack, and he stood up to the injustice, and has surprised and inspired everyone. The full fury of the deep states irrational hatred is focused on taking him down. Trump described the dems in a very interesting way. He said, ‘all you people here are geniuses but the dems are geniuses too. They stick together like glue. They took a completely false accusation and rode it all the way to the brink of impeachment. They are good at what they do. They are totally crazy and wrong but good at it” (my paraphrase). This way of saying it inspires intense desire to fight, and to win.
In his speech Trump also focuses on commending several leaders, one by one, for being great warriors. He described how they fought for him ‘as if it their lives were at stake’ (trump’s words); and how they also had to take a lot of heat. Trump didn’t want it to be this way, he said it wasn’t what he signed up for, especially for his family, but week after week he stood up to it and kept winning. He did it for all the right reasons – God, country and neighbor, and I think the people in that room learned a whole new level about doing their job for the right reason. They all went through a crucible experience together that created a deep love and bond, like people who have been in military battles together. The stakes were super high.
At one point in his speech Trump gives high praise to his legal team and tells a little story. He tells how his lawyers told him, ‘We are in the right here and the law is all in our favor’, and Trump said to them, ‘It doesn’t matter, I know I did nothing wrong, but they are going to use every trick in the book to win’. Pelosi, shitty and their crew are like terrorists, except intellectual terrorists. They don’t have a conscience like us, they will lie, twist and deceive to any end they can get away with in order to win. It’s a terrible double standard, but for our own integrity it is important conservatives do not stoop to the the ways of the dem leaders.
The effect of all this is, I believe, that the GOP has been purged of a great amount of corruption. God works to not let evil go unseen for then it cannot be removed. The experience of seeing and fighting all this lying and cheating makes one loath it, and not want to be like it; I think it has formed a conviction in the kind of leaders many in the GOP want to be. Not only are they inspired by Trump’s example of being an honest, transparent fighter for the people, but the left has shown they will attack and investigate for the slightest reason, or no reason. Trump ‘joked’: ‘I have to watch out I don’t jay-walk or they will try to impeach’. This effect is by no good intent of the left, but it is the reality. The left also, who feel very entitled to corruption, will think twice now before gettin caught lining their pockets. They will have to cut back, because their methods and pattern of corruption has been greatly exposed by GOP fighters.
As Trump said in his speech the left’s intention was to inflict pain on people to get their way. All this makes me think of God’s providence at work. God uses the evil as much or more as he uses the good to effect change. The pain the left inflicted cuts deep and causes an abhorrence of evil and a determination to fight it and not be that way. Only God can orchestrate all this. He guides us to see and do what we can not do and see on our own. He does so for the sake of our repentance, and so we learn in our stubborn heart to put him first. I think it’s true that someone like Trump has the foresight to give evil enough rope to hang themselves, but nothing like what God does. We learn from the inspiration of having a great economy and a new vision of God in America, and from the abhorrence of seeing the sickening level of corruption that is among us.
With God hope springs eternal (even for California). Trump’s ability to get results and articulate a vision full of hope is magnificent. As he says, we just might have to endure more winning that we can stand.

Here is the speech –

Description of The Democrats Devious Methods and How they Abuse Democracy – And Why It Is Not Working (Hint – The Magic Wand)

January 24th, 2020

The democrat method: Fabricate charges against opponents with lies and half truths. Bring actual legal charges against them based on these fabrications. Then blanket the media with propaganda claiming the target is a bad person, and criminal because they have charges against them. Smear the person at every step of a high profile trial. Then blame the person and GOP for the division in politics and in the country -that they caused. Repeat the process over and over and multiply with every threat that comes up – and then repeat again and again.
This method, which the dems constantly use, if successful, is the destruction of democracy. It is a total abuse of due process. This is exactly what the forefathers feared – that the evil minded would leverage the margins in democrat rules, fair play, and legal process to undermine and destroy democracy. Democracy is based on the people having a reasonable degree of fair mindedness, and fair mindedness depends on people respecting the divine (In God We Trust).
But the dem method is not working because of ‘the magic wand’, which Obama and the dem leaders know absolutely nothing of. The downfall of the evil ones is that they are by nature external minded. Even the ones that know about religious and spiritual things only do so for the sake of appearances, manipulation, control and power. The external minded no nothing of the internal, only that it’s out there. They can use their techniques with great success (even to the destruction of mankind), but their way inwardly rankles people with common sense and a conscience. What the evil minded do is not based on truth and freedom, but uses compulsion – which is the opposite of freedom and against divine order. Just as the liberal leaders abuse the rules of democracy, demons in hell use anomalies in the principles of correspondences to create magical arts far beyond the capabilities that we see the dem leaders using.
As savvy, ambitious, controlling, and determined as leaders of the new world order are they only have the power of force and deception. Their goal is irrational so they have to persuade with propaganda, force and lies. Evil people want to rule, they want others to suffer pain, ignorance and despair, and the logical end of all their efforts is the destruction of the world and that they will be like God. In the deepest hell everyone actually thinks they are God. It’s like in the movie Infinity War, the closer one comes to believing they are God, the more insane they become. Everyone in the deepest hell thinks they are God and they punish each other.
A person with a conscience doesn’t do what the democrat leaders are doing. It’s good to be aware of these things to examine in ourself if and when these motivations come up, and in becoming aware of it to abhor it.

Trump strategies are all working in tandem to have a Profound effect in creating our incredible boom economy and it will only get better as the trade deals kick in and the border wall gets built; and also as the tariffs and taxes take root. Our quality of life is getting better. Amid impeachment nonsense Trump passes a huge infrastructure deal that will improve our roads, bridges etc. We are also building pipe lines and our energy independent. Jobs, jobs, jobs. Too much winning? We want more winning

A Description of What An Apocalypse Really Is And How Evangelicals Misinterpret the Second Coming; And, How it Is that In Truth We Are Now In the Good News of the New Jerusalem

December 19th, 2019

“Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished,
And their multitude dried up with thirst. Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself. And opened its mouth beyond measure”. (Isaiah 5: 13,14)

A time of Loss of equilibrium, otherwise known as an apocalypse, has happened three times in history – at the flood in the time of Noah, before and at the Incarnation of Jesus, and at the time of the second coming. These are times of true apocalypse, because once the imbalance begins to go toward evil there is no power to stop it, other than God. In these times it’s amazing to see how God follows his own rules of divine order, meaning there has to be a process of how to overcome the problem in the natural and the spiritual world in tandem. God corrected it differently each time.
Loss of Equilibrium is when accumulation of evil becomes greater than that of good in the natural and spiritual world. In this condition to the degree there is an imbalance there is a measure of loss of freedom for man, which is a horrible thing. The imbalance is always toward evil because evil is always the initiator and aggressor of attack. In normal circumstances, (by normal I mean when there is equilibrium), neither demons or angels can compel a person toward heaven or hell; they can influence and persuade but they cannot violate free will. In the disequilibrium evil gains the ability to be able to compel people to evil which is the cause of the horror of a time of Apocalypse. Once disequilibrium starts it will only increase for it is the eternal desire of hell to destroy mankind and turn them into demons. Human beings by themselves cannot fight the arts of hell in a disequilibrium, only the power and love and presence of God can help one fight it. Those who are in this love can be protected. Our acknowledgement of Him and our love of Him receives His presence within. The relationship between God and man is reciprocal in this way.
In the centuries before Christ there was a long decline in the Jewish religion that resulted in dire separation from God. In the accumulating darkness, as people died and entered the spiritual world, evil spirits intercepted even the good through artful deceptions and led them into the cities of their false heaven. This caused an overabundance toward the evil realm. These false heavens with their deceptive leaders were bringing good people to their side in great abundance. (Apparently most of these in their heart did not become evil, but were controlled and manipulated by evil. I think God knew their heart and protected because it was the just thing to do.) Those in the real heaven were greatly distressed that good people were deceived and held in these cities. They lamented the loss and beseeched the Lord to release them. Swedenborg describes how the leaders of these cities sometimes posed as religious leaders, or even family members to persuade people to their side. These pseudo-heavens were below heaven in the world of spirits. The spirits who were held in these false heavens are known in the Bible as the captives, which I have written about more on my blog. The over-accumulation of spirits (people who have died) in these cities of pseudo-heavens caused a dark cloud, as it were, between heaven and earth. Understanding this is key because it is a significant part of the process that caused disequilibrium. The increasing cities of the false heaven actually obstructed the reception of heavenly influx to humanity on earth, thus accelerating darkness. This is what is meant by “Sheol has enlarged itself and opened its mouth beyond measure.” As the false heavens grew larger, the dark cloud of interference between heaven and earth grew greater. The less heavenly light there was for humanity on earth, the more power evil gained. Here is another verse that refers to the loss of equilibrium between heaven and hell: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (John 6:12). This verse refers to a battle and evil forces infiltrating and occupying ‘high places,’ meaning heaven. As the forces of evil grew, they were like a marauding army ransacking the first levels of heaven, and taking residence; constantly deceiving the people in the world of spirits and the angels in the lower heaven in a thousand horrid ways. Matthew describes this when he says, “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force” (Mat. 11:12).

But here is the great good news. The second coming has been accomplished. We are now in the ‘Church of the New Jerusalem’ that is spoken of in Revelation. In accomplishing the second coming the Lord promised He would never allow a disequilibrium to happen again. What is so significant about this is that it profoundly impacts our Christian world view. Many evangelicals feel and predict that there is still an apocalypse to come, the events of the millennium and all that implies could come any time. This expectation involves a great deal of gloom and doom. It is often preached that terrible, dark times are to come, that Christ is to come back on the earth and lead a great parade on a white horse, and the chosen will be raised to heaven and so on. (In reality the ‘chosen being raised to heaven’ refers to the great joy of the captives who the Father released from the false heavens – this is known as the harvest time). But for hundreds of years and still now-a-days people are constantly conjecturing that so and so was, or is the anti-Christ, and various world events are ‘signs of the millennium’. Some say Hitler was the anti-Christ. Now liberals say Trump is, and conservatives say Obama was, but none of this is the case.
In the Church of the New Jerusalem the state of things is that there is great good news, but there is no free ride. The good news is Christ is present to us directly and immediately and He will never not be so. There is no coming apocalypse. The difficult news is that this world of earth-life is always in the balance between good and evil. As I have said many times before, in this world we suffer and have joy and learn, because we are in freedom, and we need to be reformed and repentant to remove evil inclination in us. Freedom is the double-edged sword that is both the means of salvation and the cause of hell! This life is both amazingly wonderful and one hell of a bitch. Hell cannot compel us and heaven can’t give us a free ride. In today’s world there is a lot of genuine charity in the church, and there is also a lot of falsity, ill-will, and alienation in the world. We have the Trump movement, and we have the globalist/socialist movement battling it out. That’s the nature of equilibrium, it goes up and down, and all around, but we’re are still free working things out. We are protected by Christ – should we choose to accept it. In that we can always trust!

The Spirituality of Remembering and Its Role in Vastation and Salvation

November 4th, 2018

The act of remembering is a natural image of spiritual experience and is very much part of actual spiritual experience. Deep memory arises from searching our feelings and their meaning. This is an inner need that is one with an intense desire to understand the cause of things. It leads to knowing ourself and God much better. It is a reciprocal process between us and God; on our part it requires desire, and adjusting our attitude to sincerity and humility so that we can receive from God. Painful feelings, (and joyful) compel us to interpret their cause, and as we remember them with sincerity God provides compassion and wisdom like a parent watching over us, and this brings healing and relief to our soul.

When I wrote my first book on the cult people who were part of the experience and read the book found it remarkable how I remembered so many details and long dialogues. In short it was by the process I described above. It starts by searching deep painful feelings and then the cause of the feelings opens up and leads to visual, auditory and verbal memories.

To improve our psychological health it’s important to observe our inner thinking pattern for this can be very revealing. There are useful Memories, and there are those that are not useful, or are destructive. Memories of the past can act like a burden in our life consuming our vital energy with negative emotions. These can be reframed and released, but we have to be intentional about doing it and making the change. The memories have energy around them that resist change, but we can change them like wiping streaks off a windshield that obscures our view. If we make the effort and wipe them off we feel a strong sense of satisfaction and self agency. Stuck emotions from trauma insulate and protect the memories, and they are attached to compensation strategies that we repeat as patterns and sometimes negative behaviors. This is why we have to intentionally observe our thought patterns, explore their cause and change them to what we desire from our core self that is connected to God. The thoughts and exiled self behind the pattern try to convince us they can’t be changed; but if we see them we can change the way we think, live, work and process them. Once we experience changing them we can become more fluid in changing them the next time. I actually practice wiping them away as if I were cleaning a window that has a smudge with a cloth. The Bible speaks of this with these words: “Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”  (2 Corinthians 10:5).

This is just a sketch of how it works. To actually do this for most people requires therapy. I practice a therapy called ‘Yoga Therapy’, which is not about physical yoga but about bringing exiled parts of the self back into relationship with the core from which love and wisdom from God is fluid. Nevertheless, simply beginning by observing the pattern of our thoughts is very motivating, and gives one a chance to reject the negative thoughts and reframe them toward a healthy way.

Another important aspect of memory that can have a negative effect is the external accumulation of knowledge. For myself I study the Bible not to be an egghead but for the need to heal and grow (which is more of an internal accumulation). I have come to to see that accumulating knowledge is not good for my soul and spirit; it is much better for understanding to flow in the spirit. I think this is part of what Jesus means when he says: “…do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13: 11). The memory is meant to be fluid. It is ideal that there is a fluid interaction between the natural and spiritual memory so that knowledge and inspiration comes up in the moment as we need it. The mere accumulation of knowledge becomes a callosity in the mind and soul, especially when attached to pride. The understanding of things is not meant to be hoarded but shared. The desire to give and share from love and humility is the elixir that lets memory flow in the moment. Love elevates perception because contained in it is all the wisdom to manifest its purpose. Those who love to accumulate knowledge and take pride in a great breadth of knowledge can create a callosity in their mind that is a block to the spiritual and possibly to heaven. Swedenborg writes:

“The nature of the memories is sometimes presented to view in the other life. The exterior memory is thus presented to view as a callosity; the interior memory as a medullary substance such as is in the human brain. From this circumstance it is possible to know of what quality the spirits (persons) are. With those who in the life of the body have fostered the memory alone, and so have not cultivated their rational, the callosity appears hard, and striated within. With those who have filled the memory with falsities, it appears as if made of hair and shaggy, and this from the disorderly mass of things. With those who have fostered the memory for the sake of the love of self and of the world, it appears conglutinated and indurated. With those who have desired to penetrate into Divine arcana by things scientific, and especially by things philosophical, and who would not believe until persuaded by means of these things, it appears dark, and of such a nature as to absorb the rays of light, and turn them into darkness. With those who have been deceitful and hypocrites, it appears as if bony and of ebony, reflecting the rays of light. But with those who have been in the good of love and the truth of faith, such a callosity does not appear; because their interior memory transmits the rays of light into the exterior memory, in the objects or ideas of which – as in their basis or as in their ground – the rays are terminated, and find there delightful receptacles. For the exterior memory is the ultimate of order, in which spiritual and heavenly things are softly terminated and reside when there are goods and truths therein” (Arcana Celestia, 2494).

It is very enlightening to see that in heaven we have a capacity to remember the past, but mostly the past is completely released and let go of.  This is not from any kind of denial, but the heavenly mind has been vastated of evil things – traumas, and attachments to negative strategies that formerly served a purpose. Because these have been released the memories are out of mind. And the mind is free to be filled with excitement and love in the moment; it moves into a wondrous life where the past is simply not useful. Swedenborg describes how this takes place:

“Man enjoys a twofold memory, the natural and the spiritual, and in the spiritual world natural memory gradually perishes. The memory which man properly calls the memory, is the natural memory, because it is of the natural mind, and is the memory of particulars, or of material ideas which correspond to words; this memory perishes when man dies. His soul retains the faculty of reasoning and of understanding from a certain spiritual memory, or the memory of ideas rational or immaterial, as they are called. It is his memory that causes a man after death to know no otherwise than that he is still in the life of the body. But because this memory is born from the natural memory it is replete with fallacies, and it still disturbs, obscures, and, if left to itself, perverts truths; wherefore this memory also successively vanishes, insomuch that even the rational born therefrom perishes. But this memory is nevertheless retained for some time, and is imbued with the cognitions of truth, even until it can be obliterated. At length the true man remains, which is the part remaining together with new abilities acquired, which is the good soil in which heavenly seed is sown. From this there arises a new man, that is, a heavenly paradise within man, with all heavenly felicity, peace and innocence” (Spiritual Diary, 1747, Dec. 15).

The most important element in remembering has to do with innocence stored in the soul. In the Bible this is called remains. (I have written about remains extensively in another post where you can read more about it). Remains are the loves from childhood that are stored in the soul. These are the first loves for parents and playmates, they are the pure enthusiasm of play that we experienced with innocence, and that formed a bond in our heat. Remains develop in our heart before we had a conscience aware of good and evil. It is for this reason that the innocence of childhood is an external innocence and only become internal when we incorporate with intelligence and our adult conscience from our own free will. The only way to receive God is by approaching Him with humility which requires feeling (internally remembering) the innocence from remains in our soul. To remember these feelings and to incorporate them into our adult consciousness forms a bond, a bond that remains because it forms the very quality of our soul. This union of innocence and intelligence is the essence of spiritual growth and developing an internal relationship with God.

Seeing all this one can understand how important it is to begin now to identify negative memories and take the emotional charge off of them. This is the beginning of the process of vastation. In the spiritual world we will go through vastation in order to prepare for heaven; it is necessary for almost everyone in order to enter heaven. Evils must be removed from us to be in the light of heaven and the society of angels.  And for those that refuse to and can’t there is hell. The reason they can’t is that they have learned to delight in hate and evil things, and this love is the primary bond in their soul, which is not with God.

The angels that help new spirits undergo vastation are under the guidance of the Lord, and are master spiritual/psychologists, so to speak. The angels see and do what is necessary to have the evil removed if at all possible. When I think of the spiritual world and death now, vastation is the thing that makes me most anxious; what is it that is going to have to be removed from me? How can I help prepare for it now? Swedenborg writes that for sum this process is severe, difficult and painful, and for others it is not very difficult.

The Bible speaks of all this in this way: ““I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.”” (Isaiah 43:25)

CS Lewis writes: If we find ourself with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

Trump Upholds Ordinary Americans as the New Elites and the Heart of America Responds, While the Left Gets More Extreme – Why?

August 5th, 2018
Trump doing the exact opposite of the Dems. He builds up the regular people and helps us be the new ‘elites’ – responsible people that do the working and loving in the community; while the dems try to make the people feel like victims that are dependent on them, all the while holding on to their positions and making themselves Elite. People believe Trump because he backs up what he says, he gets results, he empowers the people, even simple lives make a difference. He works WITH the people to create prosperity in America. There is no free ride on the Trump train; its about the joy of being useful for a good purpose, and restoring our American identity under God in service.
Trump calls-out and exposes the inner circle of elite establishment with the same language a guy on the street would, except he is a genius at it – and is the leader of the free world. Of course it pisses the living hell out of them and they are resisting.
But it also pisses-off those who have invested so much in their identity as victims and the ideology of socialism.
Many of the left are now demonstrating, clear as day, the psychology of regression, where one reverts to the childhood emotions at the time of upset and trauma, and intense reaction is the result. Where reason is inverted to the emotions and feelings, reason is then used to justify the emotions. Regression can be good in therapy, but not in leadership and the public arena! In therapy regression can point the way to the cause of trauma so that it can be acknowledged and healed. But the left is not looking for the cause; they are doubling down overlooking the cause, and so go deeper in rage. Because they cannot face their demons, they have to justify, which manifests as ideology. To the degree they avoid and wont face themselves they’er compelled to recruit others to their way of thinking. This is where it becomes a real problem – for this is of the machinations of evil – to perpetuate their inner lie on others tears down and destroys the soul if not seen and stopped. This is what is meant in the Bible where it says:
“I will give children to be their princes,
And babes shall rule over them.
The people will be oppressed,
Every one by another and neighbor…
The child will be insolent toward the elder,
And the base toward the honorable” (Isaiah)

Audiences Around the Country sit in Stunned Silence by the Ending of Infinity War: What are the Psychological and Spiritual Causes Behind This, and the Biblical Themes that Resolve the Tension.

April 30th, 2018

The new movie Infinity War has stunned almost all viewers with its ending. This gives us a great moment to examine why Super Hero movies are so compelling to people, and the risk marvel is taking in doing this. (Spoiler alert: do not read down further for the ending is revealed).

There is a lot in the movie about parental relationships; central to this theme being Gomorah’s conflicted feelings about being the daughter of the powerful, compelling, but delusional Thanos. Also, there is the relationship of Iron Man as the father figure to the young Spider Man. Corollary to this are the several romances: there is the romance between Vision and Scarlet Witch, Starlord and Gomorah, and the Hulk and Black widow. I wont take too much time describing the dynamics of these relationships, but will assume the reader has seen the movie and understands the feeling of each. There are moments of very intense situations and feeling, such as when spider man is dying, and he says to Iron man with total vulnerability, “What’s happening to me? I don’t want to die, I am too young…what is happening Stark”. There is possibly no greater anguish for a parent to hear than these words. There is also the seen where Thanos must decide whether to sacrifice Gomorah for the sake of obtaining the soul stone, or let her live. Holding her by the arm he throws her over the cliff and she is shown dead at the bottom on the rocks.

In the movie several of our favorite characters die at the end, and there is no  resolution given to the trauma of it. The Avengers lose! Each of the superheroes are left defeated, and half of them dead. This is unheard of. At the theatre some people threw things toward the screen, and yelled, “You can’t do this! You can’t end like that!”.

There are two psychological factors that are profoundly disturbing about the end. One is that the characters have no ability to fight what is happening to them, and they have no reference point to understand it.  This is a ‘cardinal sin’ against the psychology of the child. The evil Father figure wins, and our superheroes have no ability to change this. Instilling a finality of despair in the child and giving a child no way to perceive the father figure as good is traumatic to the psyche. There is a finality to the ending  that is disturbing and painful.

In the psychology of the child we are always working-out feelings toward the imaginary good and the bad parent, for in the vulnerable world of the child these are a great potential threat, or reward. The feelings of the child go from one extreme to the other. The child uses play-objects and playmates to work out these feelings to try and make the bad father good and the bad mother good. The child needs to feel safe, that when he or she acts out, or uses objects in phantasy to destroy – they need to know that they are not really destroying but are doing it as phantasy play to work out feelings. A good parent allows this and helps set borders if they begin to do real damage to significant things. I use the word ‘phantasy’ (coined by the great psychologist, Eric Biddle) and not ‘fantasy’ purposely to distinguish a difference. ‘Fantasy’ implies make-believe in a more escapist or dissociative way; while ‘phantasy’ has to do with the use of creative imagination to resolve inner problems by such things as, working with real objects, by reflection on causes, or by seeing ourselves in stories. This is absolutely necessary for healthy development. In the child’s mind even unhealthy qualities can be made to be good, say for example, a parent that is hyper critical. In her development the child can make this to ‘feel like love’, but as the child grows up and experiences relationships she will tend to ‘not feel loved’ unless her partner is critical. This is the minds power to make good out of bad and survive, but it becomes dysfunction when we get older and must then be worked out in maturity.

Super hero movies and comics have long been a great source that fosters phantasizing about our problems, goals, and self-agency in a safe place. It’s a place to work out our feelings of destruction and our need for healing. Adults need this just as much as children. Super heroes are particularly compelling to our psychology because it is phantasy and it is about power, personal ‘super power’ and conflict with others. Its very significant to understand that as children we are helpless, but on the inside the child feels an illusory omnipotence. The child can only see and feel from them self; for instance, when she cries mother comes, when she goes in her pants someone changes her. She is the center of the universe, and must learn to slowly emerge from the self centeredness. The illusory omnipotence is a compensation for being helpless; there is a sense of specialness and power in but it is innocent and unintegrated. The specialness and sense of power are needed for self esteem, but they can also be the cause of self-centeredness. True innocent love in our heart from childhood for others is stored in our soul for this is what makes us receptive to Gods lead. The whole ark of life is to see that we are not omnipotent, but to gradually transfer omnipotence to God where it belongs. This process brings genuine self-agency into our soul as we develop skills and learn to express ourselves and give to others. This is a never-ending process through-out life that is worked out in phantasy, work, in the world, and relationships.

The ending of Infinity War is a shock because the fan’s mode of working out their feelings about the Good father is stunted, blocked, and its an awful feeling. Thanos, the super powerful father figure (who calls everyone in the movie ‘his children’, and who ‘gathers up’ all the omnipotence for himself) performs acts of evil to his daughter, and all the heroes that looks like it can’t be changed. Furthermore, the characters are destroyed in such a way that they can’t even see it coming. It’s disturbing and disorienting. Audiences around the country are reported to sit stunned for minutes, waiting for the after credits scene to see if there is any relief but non comes from that. Part of the dynamics of the movie experience is that we know it is a movie; that its not real, so it is a perfect medium for working out our phantasy needs, but unlike any other this story stunts our inner needs.

My daughter told me, “I don’t belief that Gomorah died, I refuse to believe it.” And we spent hours theorizing on how it is that those that died are not really dead but will come back. This is the power of the mind to heal or create. The movie-makers are taking the risk of traumatizing the fans to such a degree that they reject Marvel for doing this to them. Or, perhaps it is a brilliant move that so goes against the grain that it causes the fan to invest even more in the stories in order to overcome the traumatic effect. Of course the fans know it is phantasy, but still the movie-makers broke the rules, so to speak, and there is resentment.

In the short term it would seem ending a movie like this is probably not a good idea for marvel. On the other hand in the long term they may have so severely pruned their fans expectations that they created a lot of room for more growth. The fans are put in a position to have to dig deep in their resources to deal with the problem – resources that come from other parts of life.

The feeling at the ending of Infinity War reminds me of the deep gloom and loss that filled the people and disciples when Jesus was nailed to the cross. This is felt by Lucy and Susan in Narnia when Aslan is killed on the stone table. At this point in all three stories all seems lost. At the end of the movie there is a sense of despair, hopelessness and gloom, and we don’t know what is going to happen. The disciples didn’t know how the story of Jesus ends when he was on the cross – that in three days Jesus would resurrect and redeem all with the greatest good news of all time. Jesus told them this would happen but they didn’t know how to believe it, and didn’t come to believe it until it did happen. The Story of Jesus is the ultimate resource that resolves all issues of trauma with a promise and a way that never fails, if one will receive it; its not necessarily easy.

At the end of Infinity War My daughter said, “What are they going to do, make us wait to the next movie to find out what happened.” Yes, pretty much. There are signs in the movie that leave the door open for the lost heroes to come back. I think in the next movie the tension of the trauma of so many dead heroes will be resolved around the point that each time a stone was obtained by Thanos a hero was willing to give up them self for the sake of others, AND they valued the life of the one as much as the many! But Thanos, like a coward, gave up the daughter he loved for his own power. I think Thanos will repent of this and use the power of the stones to return the heroes. The willingness by the heroes to value the one as much as the many, and to sacrifice their self or their own interest for the many is straight from the Bible. Luke 15:3-5: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?”. Also, ‘There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your neighbor”. This is exactly the theme in Narnia. When the Witch claims ‘the deep magic’ against Aslan, Aslan understands and lays all on ‘the deep deep magic’ which is that the one who sacrifices them self for another on the stone table will return to life and redeem all. I think this will be the essential theme that restores our heroes in Infinity War.

Here is a very important principle to see. There is a reason why the underworld keeper of the soul stone, (who is Red skull the former leader of hydra), makes Thanos, (or anyone who seeks the power of the stone), go through a trail. In simple terms it means ‘crossing the line’ in ones heart and entering hell. Power for self is hell. Thanos utterly sells himself to the devil. No human or angel can handle the power of the divine; it is impossible, only the divine can do that. The trial, as shown in the movie in allegory, is a threshold. There is an evil force which propels one to cross the barrier, and an inertia not to. Once crossed there are consequences. In reality, as long as  we are alive we can return to humility, repent in heart, return omnipotence to God where it belongs, and be redeemed. But if we die in this state – hell is eternal. Once we die the basic constellation in the form of our soul can’t be changed, and we remain in hell forever. (People may not know this ‘theologically’, but we have inner intuitions of it and I think this is also part o the shock of the end. As much as we may resent the bad parent, we don’t want them to go to hell as Gamorah felt.) Thanos was shown to cry when he thought Gamorah had betrayed him, (but she really did  the right thing). Also, when Thanos killed her he was in great anguish over it.

On a grand scale this is like the devil tempting Jesus to sin after his 40 days and 40 nights of fasting. In an immediate way in life this means that we sin when we choose to act from our own will to commit an act that has intent to hurt, inflict harm, and destroy others. The reward is a feeling of power, and satisfaction of dominion, but it is illusory, and becomes emptiness, and in order to fill the emptiness one must pursue more and deeper evil. As long we are only thinking of doing evil acts in mind it is temptation, but not yet sin; but once it inters our will, wether we do it or not, it becomes sin because it enters our soul as a love from hell. Then we must truly go through the process of repenting of it to be redeemed from it, which is also a threshold, or process to pass through. This, I think, will be an essential theme of the next movie.

Analysis of the Falsity of the Doctrine of Salvation of Faith Alone, Its effect in History and Today

August 24th, 2015

It is important now to take a look at the corruptions of the protestant or reformed churches. In The Bible just as Babylon referred to the declined state of the Catholic Church, the Dragon refers in general to the violations of the Protestant church at their end state. The primary corruption Swedenborg points out over and over in his writing is the doctrine of salvation by faith alone. This doctrine goes hand in hand with the doctrine that the sins of humanity were washed away or atoned in a unilateral way by ‘the blood of Christ shed on the cross’ meaning that He removed the sins of humanity by His sacrifice. As I have shown above the internal meaning of this phrase and many like it refers to the redemption the Lord provided by subjugating the hells and restoring equilibrium; it does not mean that Jesus removed the sins from the body and soul of persons or humanity. As I have also shown before it is not possible for God or man to remove sins from another; the removing of sins or hereditary evil is entirely a reciprocal process by which man is regenerated under the providence of the Lord. On its face value this doctrine allows that a person can live as they wish, and at the end confess belief in the Lord and be saved. This was a corruption of religion that caused the decline and externalization of the church from the reformation to 1758. It still goes on today but much light has been added to it since then. From the beginning this doctrine was untenable and many justifications have been formulated to reconcile it to the rest of scripture. Today, by these reconciliations the teeth has been taken out of it, but nevertheless, as a doctrine it is fiercely held on to by evangelical churches. The way this doctrine is reconciled are several and varied and too confusing to site here (although Swedenborg does exactly that in ‘Apocalypse Explained’ 786). Here is scripture from Revelation about the dragon which I will examine:

And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshiped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven (Revelation).

Swedenborg describes the correspondence of how salvation by faith alone and the dragon are linked:

And they worshiped the dragon which gave authority unto the beast, signifies the acknowledgment of salvation and justification by faith alone, established and corroborated by these devised modes of conjunction, and thus received in doctrine. This is evident from the signification of “to worship,” as being to acknowledge and revere as Divine, and thus to receive in doctrine that is for the church; for such as acknowledge the Divine and from such acknowledgment revere it, these worship it, and also receive it in doctrine which is for the church. Also from the signification of “the dragon,” as being those who are in faith separated from charity in doctrine and in life. It is said that the dogma of salvation and justification by faith alone is established and corroborated by devised modes of conjoining it with good works; but it must be understood that this doctrine can in no way be established and corroborated by such means, for this dogma is meant by “the dragon,” and the confirmation of it by reasonings from the natural man is represented by this “beast;” and “the dragon and its beast” signify what is discordant with the Word and cannot be conjoined with it (AE, 789).

The beast coming up out of the sea,” signifies the reasonings of the dragon from the natural man confirming the separation of faith from life, and “the beast coming up out of the earth” signifies the confirmations of the dragon from the sense of the letter of the Word, and the falsification of it. That the dragon is also meant by the two beasts, is evident from its being said that “the dragon gave to the beast coming up out of the sea his power and his throne and great authority “(Apocolypse Explained, 774).

The dragon refers to the spiritual warfare of the evil ones that infiltrate religion and seek to take the soul out of it by confirming falsities in the hearts and minds of the leaders and the people. The fact that the doctrine of salvation by faith entrenched itself in the protestant church was a triumph of evil. This doctrine began with Luther’s effort to separate from the Catholic church. There was much good in his leadership to break from the Catholic Church and its corruptions, but in this effort to distinguish and separate the reformed church from the Catholic church he strategically hit upon the doctrine of faith alone. But by separating faith and charity the essence of the spirituality of religion is removed and it becomes external. It is significant to understand why it is that the separation of faith and charity is so damaging to the individual and to religion, but this is not to say by any means that those who believe this doctrine are going to hell or anything of the sort. As I mentioned even those who profess this do not really live by it, but usually apply the rest of religion to life. (I will put out another article soon that about the spiritual and devotional value of the union of love and wisdom (faith and charity) to life and religion). The point here is to see how this doctrine itself is false, its historical effect, and that God has providentially worked  around it to a large extent. My desire is certainly not to pile on against religion and cause others to leave it, but I feel that if we can accurately as possible define its points of failure we can reconcile our feelings about it and deepen our faith. For now the following quote explains the essential nature of the marriage of faith and charity; it also harkens back to the spirituality that we receive from the sun referred to earlier in this blog:

In their radiation heat and light (from the natural sun) become separated, as is shown by the things on which they act, some of which receive more heat and some more light. This is particularly true of people, for in this case the light of life, which is intelligence, is separated from the heat of life, which is love. This is because a person needs to be reformed and regenerated, which is impossible unless the light of life, which is intelligence, shows what ought to be willed and loved. It should, however, be known that God is constantly working to link love with wisdom in a person, though he, unless he looks to God and believes in Him, is constantly working to separate them. In so far as these two are separated in a person, so far does he become an image of Lucifer and the Dragon, and is cast down from heaven to earth, and then into hell beneath the earth.
When spiritual heat, which is love, is separated from spiritual light, which is wisdom, charity is separated from faith. Then the enticements of the love of evil, which are in themselves longings, burst forth, untamed and unrestrained by intelligence, but rather fostered, pampered and nourished by it. In short, the separation of love and wisdom, or charity and faith, the two things God constantly strives to link, is, to use a comparison, like depriving a face of redness, so producing a pallor as of death; or taking the whiteness away from redness, which makes the face like a blazing torch. It is also like destroying the bond of marriage between a couple, so that the wife becomes a prostitute and the husband an adulterer.

It is fascinating and important to see how this doctrine operates in and from history. With this knowledge on can see the effects in modern churches. It is important to see because this is the source of many problems unchurched people have with religion, particularly of the evangelical style. The following quote is an exceptionally astute analysis of how this doctrine lingers and limits the genuine expression of faith for many people.

That faith alone, or faith separated from goods in act, which are good works, is not possible, is evident from this, that the essence of faith is charity, and charity is the affection of doing the things that belong to faith; consequently faith without charity is like thought without affection; and as thought without affection is no thought, so faith without charity is no faith. Therefore to speak of faith without charity is to speak of life without a soul, of form without that which forms, of a product without that which produces, and of an effect without a cause; and for this reason faith alone is a nonentity; and from a nonentity to produce good works, as a good tree produces fruits, is a contradiction, whereby what is believed to be something is not anything. Because faith without charity is not possible; and yet the thought and persuasion that a thing is so appears as if it were faith, and is called faith; but it is not saving faith, it is historical faith, because it is from the mouth of another. For one who believes anything from another whom he thinks worthy of belief, and who receives this, stores it in his memory, and from the memory thinks and speaks about it without seeing whether it be false or true, has no other hold upon it than as something historical. But if he confirms this in himself by appearances from the Word and by reasonings, from historical faith it becomes to him persuasive faith, which faith is like the sight of an owl, which sees objects in darkness and nothing in the light.

Very few people understand this, but many have expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the church because of this phenomenon of having hollow doctrine forced upon them. In the above quote Swedenborg gives voice to the source of this problem. People want genuine faith, and of course many find it, but this historical faith too often gets in the way either by entrenching itself in the church or turning people off to the church. Historical faith comes from tradition, from ‘the mouths of others’. Internal faith is the sweet stuff. Those in power of evangelical churches are taught that to be a true church they must teach this doctrine, so it is passed on from crony to crony, and the voice and feelings of others are at least partially frustrated, and it is most often difficult to say exactly why. Now days even churches that profess the doctrine of salvation by faith alone do not really live by it. Any good church teaches that we must do good things in life and apply the teachings of Jesus to our daily lives. So since the second coming much recovery has come about from the corruption of this doctrine, but it still persists as doctrine to a great extent in evangelical churches. In progressive churches Evil has also worked its machinations by an intense reaction to this doctrine. They moved to the polar opposite; that is, in progressive churches there is a great distaste for and rejection of almost all doctrine. Thus these churches give a very low authority to the Bible and the Lord. But Good doctrine is necessary for the understanding of the Word. It gives guidance to the reception and understanding of the Word and form to our beliefs. In my view this later development is the greater tragedy for it tends toward being lukewarm to the Word and God, and this the Lord hates. Evangelical churches serve the great purpose of holding up the divine authority of the Word and Christ. Both nevertheless are under the providential guidance of the Lord and serve to connect humanity in varying degrees to receive knowledge of the Lord and heaven.

Understanding the ‘Captives’ in the Bible Key to Understanding Redemption

July 19th, 2015

To get a strong sense of the big picture in the Bible it is essential to understand what is meant by ‘the captives,’ and similarly by the descent of Jesus into hell. I have discussed this theme in part before in this blog but it is worth understanding it further. The captives are a direct result of the loss of equilibrium. Most people are familiar with the story of the Lord descending into hell and releasing the captives after his ascension to heaven, but obtaining a real sense of what this means is elusive without an understanding of the loss of equilibrium.

The captives are those who were unjustly intercepted by evil spirits when they died and were held in a pseudo-heavens. When people first enter the spiritual world, they usually seek out loved ones, and they are always attended by angels. However, during the imbalance, evil spirits had undue power in the world of spirits and heaven. The evil spirits used their arts to deceive the new spirits, and, by persuasion and deception, they seduced these people to enter their own city, whether they were good or bad. The city, or the society, the renegade spirits created was not heaven or hell, but rather it was a pseudo-heaven created by the evil spirits where the good and the bad lived together as they did on earth. These pseudo heavens were below the real heaven in the world of spirits, which is between heaven and hell. They were run by evil spirits that posed as good leaders. These cities were defying the laws of the Lord’s divine order, and are a tragic situation that is greatly lamented by the angels. As we have shown before this is part of the decline of religion. Lets look at this in scripture.

This theme of the captives is described in many places in the Word, but perhaps nowhere better than in the parable of the wheat and the chaff. This parable describes how an enemy sowed the chaff with the wheat, which is where chaff doesn’t belong. The two become inextricably tied together, and the Lord tells them to not separate the two until the time of the harvest. After telling the parable about the plants, He then tells the internal meaning of the story to the disciples. The parable is an overview of the judgement, and a description of the process of it. The events described partly take place on earth, but mostlyin the spiritual world. The events described in Revelation are a detailed description of how the Lord separated out the good and the evil in each particular place, otherwise known as the judgment. Without an understanding of the correspondential meaning of the cities, places, and events in Revelation, and without an understanding of how these apply to the spiritual world, it is hard to get a grasp of how to understand that book. It is often asked, “Why did the Lord allow the good and evil to remain together until the harvest?” We will address this question because it helps to give us a tangible understanding of the process.

The activity in the psuedo heavens in the spriritual world mirror what was happening in the church on earth, and we can get an idea of the dynamics there by by observing them in the Jewish religion. The religious leaders of the ancient Jews had become mostly power obsessed. They claimed authoruty to themsselvs and kept the people under their power with all the strict religious rules. The people themselves though, still learned of God and religion from them, and if they practiced thier faith sincerely, even if it had falsities, they received some degree of connection to the Word and heaven. The religious leaders had to act according to the laws and keep up appearences even if inwardly they were evil. In this way the two were inistrictably tied together. The leaders served the purpose of religion, even though they were evily motivated, so the Lord could not seperate them from the people until the time was right to obolish the representative church. The same kind of thing was taking place in the psuedo heavens in the spirituul world. The leaders were sheltered from the Lord’s immediate judgement because they were serving a religious purpose to the common people, that is, they provided knowledge of the Word to the people and oversaw all the functions of the temple that provided correspondences to heaven. But when the Lord came into the world everything was prepared for all this to change, and each person would receive justice occording to their internal state. The captives specifically then are those who were unjustly kept in the psuedo heavens of the spiritual world. In the Old testament the attack and insurection of evil forces on the world of spirits and the first levels of heaven (and the resulting psuedo heavens) is told by correspondences in the story of the Tower of Babel, and in Isaiah:

And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth (Gen. 11:2-4).

Thou mayest take up this parable concerning the king of Babylonia. Jehovah hath broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of those having dominion; thou, Lucifer, hast fallen from heaven; thou art cut down even to the earth; thou hast said in thy mind, I will ascend into the heavens; I will exalt my throne over the stars of God, and I sit on the mountain of the assembly, in the sides of the north, I will become like the Most High. Nevertheless thou shalt be cast down into hell, to the sides of the pit; I will cut off the name and residue of Babylon and will cause her to become an hereditary possession of the bittern (Isaiah 14:4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 15, 22, 23).

These scriptures tell how evil minded leaders used and abused the power of the Word to set up false heavens and control the people, but were finally taken down in the judgement. Swedenborg writes of the Tower of Babel:

By Babylon are meant all who wish to have dominion by religion. To have dominion by religion, is to have dominion over men’s souls, thus over their very spiritual life, and to use the Divine things, which are in their religion, as the means. All those who have dominion for an end, and religion for the means are in general Babylon. They are called Babylon because such dominion began in ancient times; but it was destroyed in its beginning. Its commencement is described by the city and the tower, the head of which was to be in heaven (AC 54).

The man…who does not acknowledge a God, is under the dominion of infernal spirits. Knowing this, (leaders) who build Babylonish towers make themselves a name by means of doctrinal and holy things, for otherwise they could not be worshiped, which is signified in what next follows by their otherwise being scattered over the faces of the whole earth, that is, they would not be acknowledged. And from this it follows that the higher such men can lift up the head to heaven, the more they make themselves a name. Their dominion is greatest over those who have some conscience; for these they lead whithersoever they will; but as to those who have not conscience, they rule all such by means of various external bonds (AC 1308).

The tower of Bable is a corresondential description of how the evil forces would build the false heavens in the world of spirits and infultrate the natural and spiritual heaven. If the process just described had continued without correction, the captives and eventually all of humanity would have lost all freedom at the hand of evil spirits.

All of what has proceeded in this book is meant to lead to one particular point: the perception of the magnificence of what the Lord has done for us as the redeemer. We have seen how the people were subject to the cosmic power of sin and death. If this had gone on unchecked, oblivion would have been the result. Without freedom, we are nothing. The freedom to do good is the only real power humans have; for its opposite, to commit to doing evil, is spiritual death. In spiritual death the evil spirits still have power to pursue their interets, but their internals are closed, which means their soul is dead to life. On earth, freedom can be taken away by political systems, economic circumstance, family roles, and many other things, but we have an internal freedom in our soul that cannot be taken away. The former is external, and the later internal. Inside, despite our circumstances, we have a fighting spirit that upholds our identity, passion, and loves. No-one expressed this better than Victor Frankl, the great psycholigist who lived through the Natzi concentration camps; and related his story and beliefs in ‘Mans Search for Meaning’. I see human freedom as a series of concentric circles. It is possible for our freedom to become smaller and smaller within these cirlces, but, no matter how small the outside gets, inside it cannot be taken away. We can choose how we deal with and how we feel about our cricumstances, and by the love in our heart.

In the light of what we have revealed in this article, I believe it is spiritually very healthy to recognize that the Lord alone maintains the equilibrium, and thus that freedom is entirely a gift from God; for with this awareness comes a sense of humility and gratitude toward Him.
